Why is the Bitcoin price different on each exchange?
Because every exchange is its own market. The price it shows is the last trade between its own customers, in the currency the pair is quoted in, so Bitcoin is rarely exactly the same price on two of them. In the week to 28 October 2026, BTC/USDT on Binance, Bybit and KuCoin stayed within 0.021% of each other 95% of the time, while BTC/USD on Coinbase sat a typical 0.141% below Binance’s BTC/USDT, mostly because USDT itself traded at about $0.9987.
Past figures, not a forecast. These numbers describe one week of prices, read every 15 minutes. Another week can look different.

Every exchange has its own price
An exchange matches orders between its own customers, and the price on its chart is the result: Coinbase’s API documentation describes each candle’s close as the “closing price (last trade)” of that period. Kraken’s support page says that “Prices on exchanges are based on client activity”, which “explains why prices across exchanges are never exactly the same, as they have different clients with different activity”.
The second reason is the currency. BTC/USDT is priced in USDT, BTC/USDC in USDC, and BTC/USD in US dollars. USDT and USDC are stablecoins designed to stay at one dollar, but each trades at its own price, which can sit above or below a dollar, so a Bitcoin price in USDT and one in dollars differ even when two exchanges agree on what Bitcoin is worth.
Price sites add a third kind of number: an average. CoinGecko’s methodology says it collects prices “across all tickers on all exchanges integrated to CoinGecko” and, once outliers are removed, calculates “the VWAP of all remaining tickers”, a volume-weighted average price: an average across exchanges, not one exchange’s trades. Even an exchange’s own price page can mix sources: Coinbase’s Bitcoin page notes that “Data presented may reflect assets traded on Coinbase’s exchange and select other cryptocurrency exchanges”.

What we measured: one week, five exchanges, every 15 minutes
We read six Bitcoin pairs every 15 minutes from 21 October 2026, 19:00 UTC to 28 October 2026, 19:00 UTC, and compared the other five with Binance’s BTC/USDT at the same moment. All six are pairs that Crypto Alerts & Alarms can follow. A gap “below” means the pair was priced lower than Binance’s BTC/USDT; the typical gap is the median of 672 readings.
| Pair | Typical gap | Within, 95% of the time | Largest gap | When |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BTC/USDT on Bybit | 0.001% below | 0.011% | 0.079% above | 15:30 UTC on 23 Oct |
| BTC/USDT on KuCoin | 0.002% below | 0.021% | 0.037% above | 03:30 UTC on 22 Oct |
| BTC/USDC on Binance | 0.113% below | 0.139% | 0.153% below | 15:30 UTC on 26 Oct |
| BTC/USD on Coinbase | 0.141% below | 0.182% | 0.201% below | 20:30 UTC on 26 Oct |
| BTC/USD on Kraken | 0.137% below | 0.177% | 0.207% below | 12:30 UTC on 27 Oct |
Same currency, different exchange: a small gap. Bybit’s and KuCoin’s BTC/USDT were within 0.011% and 0.021% of Binance’s 95% of the time. The widest gap between the three at any reading was 0.097%, at 15:30 UTC on 23 Oct. The two dollar pairs, on Coinbase and Kraken, were also close to each other: within 0.023% of each other in 95% of readings.
Different currency: a bigger gap. Coinbase’s BTC/USD was below Binance’s BTC/USDT at 672 of 672 readings, typically 0.141% below it, or about $114 per bitcoin. Kraken’s was typically 0.137% below (about $111), and Binance’s own BTC/USDC 0.113% below (about $91).
USDT, USDC and US dollars: the gap that is not about the exchange
Most of the dollar gap was the price of USDT itself. On Kraken, USDT/USD had a median of $0.9987 over the same week, 0.13% below one dollar, and its 15-minute readings ranged from $0.9982 to $0.9993. USDC traded at a median of 1.0011 USDT on Binance. Convert Binance’s BTC/USDT into the other pair’s currency at those rates, reading by reading, and most of each gap goes away:
| Pair | Typical gap as quoted | In the same currency: typical gap, and 95% of the time within |
|---|---|---|
| BTC/USDC on Binance | 0.113% below | 0.001% below; within 0.011% |
| BTC/USD on Coinbase | 0.141% below | 0.008% below; within 0.025% |
| BTC/USD on Kraken | 0.137% below | 0.004% below; within 0.022% |
So in this week, most of the difference between dollar and USDT prices for Bitcoin was the exchange rate between the two currencies, not one exchange pricing Bitcoin differently from another. How far USDT and USDC have moved from a dollar has its own page: USDT and USDC price alerts. Which of these pairs an alert should follow is answered in how to set up price alerts.
The Coinbase premium, measured
The gap between Coinbase and Binance has a name. CryptoQuant, one of the data sites that publish it, defines the Coinbase premium as “the price difference between Coinbase’s BTCUSD pair and Binance’s BTCUSDT pair” (its data guide, checked 28 October 2026). When Coinbase’s price is the lower one, reports call it a negative premium.
Measured that way, Coinbase’s price was a median 0.141% below Binance’s over the week. In 95% of readings the two were no more than 0.182% apart, and the widest gap, 0.201% below, came at 20:30 UTC on 26 Oct. With both prices in dollars, the median gap was 0.008% below. In this week, then, the premium mostly measured USDT’s own price against the dollar, not a difference between the two exchanges.
Why an alert can fire at a price another exchange’s chart never showed
An alert in Crypto Alerts & Alarms follows one pair on one exchange, the one you picked when you set it, and the alert’s card in the app shows that exchange when you expand it. It fires when that pair’s price crosses your level, and the notification shows the price that crossed it: in a fast move, that first price at or past your level can be a little beyond the level itself. Open a chart of another exchange, another currency or a price site’s average, and its high or low can stop short of your level.
| Pair | Week’s high | Week’s low |
|---|---|---|
| BTC/USDT on Binance | 84,847.31 | 79,220.74 |
| BTC/USDT on Bybit | 84,870.40 | 79,217.90 |
| BTC/USDT on KuCoin | 84,837.30 | 79,240.90 |
| BTC/USDC on Binance | 84,800.35 | 79,132.68 |
| BTC/USD on Coinbase | 84,814.88 | 79,107.00 |
| BTC/USD on Kraken | 84,796.00 | 79,120.80 |
In this week, the highest price on any of the six pairs was 84,870.40 (BTC/USDT on Bybit), while BTC/USD on Kraken topped out at 84,796.00: any level in between was reached on the first and never on the second’s chart. The same happened in one currency, where BTC/USDT reached 84,870.40 on Bybit but only 84,837.30 on KuCoin. At the bottom, BTC/USD on Coinbase fell to 79,107.00, while BTC/USDT on KuCoin never went below 79,240.90.
To check an alert against a chart:
- Open the same pair on the same exchange, for example BTC/USDT on Binance rather than BTC/USD somewhere else.
- Look at each candle’s high and low, not only its close: a level can be crossed inside a candle that closes back on the other side.
- Use a spot chart. A futures chart is another market with its own prices, and the app follows spot pairs only.
How we measured
15-minute candles from each exchange’s public market data (spot markets; Kraken’s API calls BTC/USD XBT/USD), plus USDT/USD on Kraken and USDC/USDT on Binance for the conversions, over the 672 quarter hours from 21 October 2026, 19:00 UTC to 28 October 2026, 19:00 UTC. Each gap compares a pair’s closing price for a quarter hour with Binance BTC/USDT’s for the same quarter hour. “Typical” is the median, and “95% of the time” is the 95th percentile of the gap’s size, up or down. As a check on Kraken’s USDT rate, USDT-USD on Coinbase had a median of $0.9987 over the same readings.
Kraken’s public candle endpoint returns only its latest 720 candles, seven and a half days at 15 minutes, which is why the comparison covers one week. Readings every 15 minutes can miss a gap that opened and closed within a quarter hour. The date at the top shows when the figures were last calculated.

Common questions
Why is the Bitcoin price different on different exchanges?
Each exchange is a separate market: its price is the last trade between its own customers, and pairs are quoted in different currencies, such as USDT, USDC or US dollars. In the week to 28 October 2026, BTC/USDT on Binance, Bybit and KuCoin stayed within 0.021% of each other 95% of the time, while BTC/USD on Coinbase was typically 0.141% below Binance’s BTC/USDT.
Why is Bitcoin cheaper on Coinbase?
In the week to 28 October 2026, mostly because of the currency: Coinbase’s price is in US dollars, while Binance’s BTC/USDT, the price the Coinbase premium compares it with, is in USDT, which traded at a median of $0.9987 on Kraken. Coinbase’s BTC/USD was typically 0.141% below Binance’s BTC/USDT, but only 0.008% below once Binance’s price was converted to dollars. Past figures, not a forecast.
What is the Coinbase premium?
The gap between Bitcoin’s price on Coinbase in US dollars and on Binance in USDT, as CryptoQuant defines it. In the week to 28 October 2026, Coinbase’s price was a median 0.141% below Binance’s, and 0.008% below with both in dollars. Past figures, not a forecast.
Why did my price alert fire when the chart never reached that price?
Because the chart may show a different market: another exchange, another currency, or a price site’s average. An alert in Crypto Alerts & Alarms follows the one pair on the one exchange you set it on, and in the week to 28 October 2026 Bitcoin’s highest price was 84,870.40 on one pair but 84,796.00 on another.
How much does the Bitcoin price differ between exchanges?
In the week to 28 October 2026, far less between pairs in the same currency than between currencies: BTC/USDT on Bybit and KuCoin stayed within 0.011% and 0.021% of Binance’s 95% of the time, while BTC/USD was typically 0.141% below it on Coinbase and 0.137% below it on Kraken.
