What time does the crypto daily candle close?

By the Crypto Alerts & Alarms team · Published 28 October 2026 · Read from each exchange’s own candles; API docs checked 28 October 2026

On Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, Bybit and KuCoin, the daily candle closes at 00:00 UTC, the moment the next one opens. In New York that is 19:00, or 20:00 in summer time; in London, 00:00, or 01:00 in summer time; in India, 05:30; and in Singapore, 08:00. Weekly candles are where the exchanges differ: Binance and Bybit start each week on Monday 00:00 UTC, Kraken and KuCoin on Thursday 00:00 UTC.

Every candle time on this page was read from the exchanges’ own Bitcoin candles on 28 October 2026. A candle’s close is only where a chart draws a line. For whether the crypto market itself ever closes, and when it moves most, see when crypto is most volatile.

Daily, weekly and monthly candles on each exchange

When each exchange’s Bitcoin candles open, read from the open times of its own candles on 28 October 2026. Each candle closes when the next one opens.
ExchangeDaily candle opensWeekly candle opensMonthly candle opensCandles read
Binance00:00 UTCMonday 00:00 UTC1st of the month, 00:00 UTC30 daily, 12 weekly, 6 monthly

Kraken00:00 UTCThursday 00:00 UTCNo monthly size in its API30 daily, 12 weekly
Coinbase00:00 UTCNone in its API docsNone in its API docs30 daily

A candle closes when the next one opens. Binance’s candle data spells it out: each daily candle carries a close time of 23:59:59.999 UTC, one millisecond before the next day’s candle starts. Monthly candles, on the exchanges that offer them, start on the 1st of the month, 00:00 UTC.

Candle sizes from each exchange’s API documentation, checked 28 October 2026: Binance, Bybit, KuCoin, Kraken, Coinbase Exchange and Coinbase Advanced Trade. Binance’s documentation says its candle intervals are read in UTC unless another time zone is asked for; the other candle pages do not say at what time of day a candle starts. The times in the table come from the candles themselves.

Kraken and KuCoin start the week on Thursday

Put the weekly candles Binance or Bybit publish next to Kraken’s or KuCoin’s and they do not line up. On Binance and Bybit a weekly candle runs from Monday 00:00 UTC to the next Monday; on Kraken and KuCoin it runs from Thursday 00:00 UTC to the next Thursday. The two kinds of week share no open or close, so their highs, lows and weekly change cover different days.

Neither exchange’s candle documentation says why. Every Kraken and KuCoin weekly open time we read was a whole number of weeks after 1 January 1970, the date Unix time counts from, which was a Thursday.

Coinbase’s API documentation lists no weekly candle. Its Exchange API refused a weekly size (“Unsupported granularity”), while its Advanced Trade API, asked for a weekly size its documentation does not list, returned weeks that open on Monday 00:00 UTC.

These are the candles each exchange serves through its API. A chart elsewhere can group weeks its own way, so when two weekly charts disagree, check which day each one starts its week.

Where a city has two times, the second one applies while its clocks are on summer time:

Cities with one time keep the same clock all year. Rules checked 28 October 2026; the table itself is worked out from the IANA time zone database, which also covers the other cities in each row.

Daily change, 24-hour change and time-zone settings

A daily candle’s change and a ticker’s 24-hour change are different numbers. Binance’s API documentation describes its 24-hour ticker as “24 hour rolling window price change statistics”: it always covers the last 24 hours, so it has no fixed start, while the daily candle starts at 00:00 UTC. Kraken’s ticker reports both windows: its documentation says “Today’s prices start at midnight UTC”, and it reports volume and average price for today and for the last 24 hours separately (Kraken API).

Binance also lets developers move the start of the day. Its candle API takes a timeZone parameter: set to 8 (UTC+8), the daily candle opened at 16:00 UTC, which is midnight in Singapore. For its own charts, Binance’s blog has described a Change (%) Basis setting that measures the percentage change from 00:00 in a time zone you choose, and said that “Changes will not be applied to Kline candlesticks” (Binance Blog, checked 28 October 2026).

Price alerts do not wait for a candle to close

An alert in Crypto Alerts & Alarms follows your pair’s price as the exchange reports it, at any hour, so it fires when the price crosses your level, not when a candle closes. Alerts are checked on our servers, so they fire with the app closed.

A percentage alert measures from the price when you set it up, not from the daily open: a 5% alert set up at 15:00 UTC fires on a 5% move from the 15:00 price, up, down or either way, as you choose. How big a percentage alert should be, coin by coin.

How we checked

On 28 October 2026 we asked each exchange’s public API for its latest Bitcoin candles: BTC/USDT on Binance, Bybit and KuCoin, XBT/USD on Kraken and BTC-USD on Coinbase, in every daily, weekly and monthly size the exchange offers (the table shows how many of each). We read the time each candle opened, in UTC, and checked that every candle of one size opened at the same time of day and, for weekly candles, on the same weekday. The documentation gives the sizes; the times come from the candles. The date at the top shows when the candles were last read.

At 00:00 UTC on Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, Bybit and KuCoin, the moment the next daily candle opens. In New York that is 19:00, or 20:00 in summer time; in London, 00:00, or 01:00 in summer time.

What time does the Bitcoin weekly candle close?

On Binance and Bybit, at Monday 00:00 UTC, which in New York is Sunday 19:00, or 20:00 in summer time. Kraken and KuCoin close their weeks at Thursday 00:00 UTC instead, and Coinbase’s API documentation lists no weekly candle.

When does the daily candle start in the UK, the Philippines or Australia?

On Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, Bybit and KuCoin, a new daily candle starts at 00:00 UTC: in the UK, 00:00, or 01:00 in summer time; in the Philippines, 08:00; in Sydney and Melbourne, 10:00, or 11:00 in summer time.

Why do Kraken and KuCoin weekly candles start on Thursday?

Neither exchange’s candle documentation explains it. Their weekly candles open at Thursday 00:00 UTC, and each open time we read was a whole number of weeks after 1 January 1970, the date Unix time counts from, which was a Thursday.

What time does the crypto market reset?

If you mean the daily candle, a new one starts at 00:00 UTC on Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, Bybit and KuCoin. A rolling 24-hour figure, such as Binance’s 24-hour ticker, has no reset time: it always covers the last 24 hours.
